The REMstar Humidifier by Respironics is designed to help avoid a sore throat from constantly breathing cold, dry air. When the heated humidification device was first invented in the early 90's, it was thought of purely as an add-on device to make CPAP more comfortable.
The air was humidified by evaporating water, removing the dryness that CPAP users often complained about. The added benefit therefore, was that compliance time increased due to the improvement in comfort.
If the nasal airway is unable to maintain sufficient warmth and humidity during the constant air flow whilst using CPAP therapy, your airways lose moisture and will eventually show symptoms consistent with upper airway drying and inflammation, such as:
Breakdown of the soft tissue
Dry nose
Dry throat
Infections
Cracked lips
Headache
People often find that speech and clearing their nose also becomes difficult. This can result in less compliance with the therapy. Maximum compliance is achieved by maximizing your comfort. The easiest and most successful way to increase your comfort is by using heated humidification.

A Few Points About Humidifiers... If you live in a very humid environment, you may still need a heated humidifier for your CPAP system, because there are often air conditioning systems and dehumidifiers operating, which make the air cold and dry. People often ask about catching infections from a humidifier, but research has shown that this does not happen because the heated humidifier chamber under most operating conditions is such that the majority of pathogens are killed. The humidity travels from the chamber in vapour form, which is too small for bacteria or a virus to travel in.
