Do you think you suffer from sleep apnoea?

The SleepStrip is the quickest way to find out!

  • Do you regularly feel unrefreshed, even after waking from a full night's sleep?
  • Do you fall asleep easily during your waking hours, white at home or at work?
  • Are you a loud, habitual snorer?
  • Has your bed partner witnessed you choking, gasping or holding your breath during sleep?
  • Do you often suffer from poor concentration or judgement, memory loss, irritability and/or depression?
  • Do you have high blood pressure?
  • Do you have a neck size 17 or over?
  • Do you suffer from sexual dysfunction?

If any of those apply to you or someone you know, it may well be a case of sleep apnoea indeed. A person with sleep apnoea stops breathing during sleep, sometimes as often as a hundred times lasting more than ten seconds each time without realizing it. Not only does this cause excessive daytime sleepiness which may affect driving, work performance or their relationship, sleep apnoea also results in blood oxygen deprivation which may lead to other disease such as cardiovascular (heart) problems and diabetes.

Whilst the signs of sleep apnoea are fairly obvious, determining whether it is in fact a case of interrupted or reduced (hypopnea) breathing traditionally took an overnight visit to a sleep clinic to know for sure.

SleepStrip Pre-Screens Sleep Apnoea

The innovative SleepStrip is now often the first step in finding out more about a patient's sleep related breathing disorder. The NHS uses the single-channel SleepStrip to pre-screen suspected OSAHS patients to make sure the symptoms are indeed caused by interrupted breathing during sleep. Now you can order the SleepStrip yourself and find out from the comfort of your own bed what happens at night. (Or send it to a family member, friend or colleague you see suffering from the symptoms mentioned above.)

With the introduction of the SleepStrip, you don't have to risk an expensive overnight sleep study (as much as £1,500) or wait for many months on an NHS waiting list, just to find out it wasn't sleep apnoea in the first place! The SleepStrip will tell you the next morning how severely your breathing was interrupted, if at all. With this crucial knowledge you - after consulting your GP - can then choose to be enlisted for a test in a sleep clinic, order an in-home sleep test such as the Stardust II we offer or consult a dentist for a dental splint.

How Does The SleepStrip Work?

After you have ordered the SleepStrip online and had your kit delivered, just follow the simple instructions included. You simply peel off the paper (just like a sticker) and position the SleepStrip between nose and mouth making sure the sensors are placed in the path of the air you exhale. The SleepStrip stays in place with a skin-friendly type of glue. During the night, each one of the three airflow sensors detects breathing patterns and the built-in microprocessor analyzes this data throughout the night (at least 5 hours required). The next morning you take it off and by the time you have finished breakfast, the score will be available to you.

Simple & Objective Detection of Sleep Apnoea

The display of the SleepStrip will show one of five possible outcomes. If you are unsure what to make of it you can discuss the results and the short questionnaire with your doctor or send it back to us to discuss what these scores mean for you and what to do next.

The display shows one of the following outcomes:

  • 0 - Low risk for sleep apnoea - the SleepStrip detected fewer than 15 apnoea events (stops in breathing) per hour.
  • 1 - Mild sleep apnoea - the SleepStrip recorded 15 to 24 breathing lapses per hour.
  • 2 - Moderate sleep apnoea - your pre-screening test resulted in the detection of 25 to 39 apnoea events an hour.
  • 3 - Severe sleep apnoea - you stopped breathing 40 times or more an hour.
  • E - Error - Study too short or other problems.

Is the SleepStrip a Valid CPAP Prescription?

Whilst being clinically recognized as a valuable tool in pre-screening sleep apnoea, the SleepStrip is no substitute for a multi-channel sleep test currently required for the prescription of CPAP. For CPAP, you will need to get an in-home multi-channel test done next (which records many more input channels than respiratory flow alone) or a test at a sleep clinic in a hospital. A SleepStrip test followed by the Stardust II multi-channel test can be a fast track to CPAP therapy. Instead of months on a waiting list, SleepStrip + Stardust II can get you a valid CPAP recommendation in weeks.

Do Dentists Accept SleepStrip for MAD/Dental Splints?

Yes, the SleepStrip can be used as a referral for a dental solution to mild obstructive sleep apnoea. Please note that the SleepStrip cannot make a distinction between central and obstructive sleep apnoea and only the latter can in some cases be treated with dental appliances. We can help you find a suitable, 'SleepStrip-aware' dentist in your area.
